Civil Engineering has always been concerned with the relationship between physical infrastructure and the environment. Our infrastructure must be sustainable. This means the sustainability of our water supplies, drainage and flood management and our sanitation systems. National economic development also depends on the sustainability of our transportation systems, including our road and rail network.
